About a month ago I got accepted to teach with JET, the Japanese government’s international exchange program that places English teachers in public schools across Japan.
Two weeks ago I gave notice at my Day Job, telling them that I needed time to prepare for the move.

If you’ve been following my Novel Updates Series then you already know the story: I’m writing a novel that takes place at a grad school writing program in the Midwest, and for the last year and a half I’ve been buried in the revision process—you know, that part where you go back and edit everything you’ve written until it’s actually turns out good.
Last year I finished pen and paper edits for the third draft, and a few months after starting my Secret Office Day Job I started typing them up, page for page and line for line. Because I’ve been busy, it was taking a REALLY long time, which is why I started posting updates here to keep myself on track.

AWESOME UPDATE: Eikaiwa Bums is out! This post is about how I queried the press and signed the contract, but you can also read about what happened when it actually came out, or cut to the chase and order a copy from my webstore.
So a little while ago I got some REALLY amazing news: in August, Blue Cubicle Press will be publishing my short story, Eikaiwa Bums, as a chapbook in its Overtime series of fiction about work. And just like that, I’ll have a book out.
Though this is hardly my first time getting my writing published, the Eikaiwa Bums chapbook feels like a BIG step because it’s an actual printed book that people can hold in their hand and read, as opposed to reading online or as part of a bigger magazine. It’s been a long month, and an even longer year.
That’s not to say it hasn’t been a successful year of getting a lot of things done, because it has. Since I talk all the time about the importance of tracking your goals, here’s a quick list of things I got done in 2017:
It’s that time of year again.
For the past five years I’ve done a yearly Art Swap where I round up a group of creative folks (almost all of whom have Day Jobs of their own) and everyone makes a project of some kind, in any medium, big or small. They make enough for everyone in the swap, mail them to me, and I collect the shipping money and mail the projects out to everyone else.
Organizing the whole thing is surprisingly simple—I keep in touch via plain ol’ email, set some deadlines early on to keep people on track, then send out group reminders as those deadlines get closer. I’m absolutely ashamed to admit this, but it’s true.
According to my Daily Schedule Log, I last put in actual writing time on my new novel on June 1st, the day I finished editing the final chapter of Draft Three. Since I’m drafting this entry on Labor Day to schedule for next week, that means my No-Novel period’s run just over three months, and that’s a long time.
To my credit, it’s definitely been a busy three months since I started my new Office Day Job. This is partly because I’ve actually been working more hours and was dealing with a nasty commute for the first few weeks, but also because of the general life upheaval that came with the new job throwing off my old writing schedule. For those of you who missed last’s week’s Life Update, I totally got a new Day Job to replace my old Secret Work-From-Home one, so what follows will make way more sense if you check that out first. (TLDR Version: My new job’s in an office doing a writing/editing-type activity, the conditions make it ideal for keeping up with my novel, this blog, and other creative projects, and to lessen my commute I moved to a new apartment a mere 3.6 miles from the new job.)

No joke—last week I worked 65 hours, dealt with a nasty flat tire on my trusty Volvo, and still managed to see the New Pornographers concert that I’d been looking forward to for months.

…well, most of them anyway. Last week I cashed out a good chunk of savings to pay off one of my final two student loans, a financial move that cut my monthly payment by two-thirds (!!). That basically equates to a ton more financial flexibility each month (i.e., more cash for whatever I want).
